Rupert Fankhauser
Rupert Fankhauser studied with Peter Schmidl and Johann Hindler at the Academy (now University) of music in Vienna as well as with Alois Brandhofer. He was granted a scholarship by the Herbert von Karajan Foundation of Berlin.
He was appointed principal clarinettist of the Municipal Theatre of Klagenfurt and of the Carinthian Symphony Orchestra in 1985.
At the same time he worked as principal clarinettist of the Gustav Mahler Youth Orchestra. Later he was principal clarinettist of the Cape Town Symphony Orchestra (1993-94).
He has worked on tour with both the Vienna and Berlin Philharmonic orchestras as appearing as a soloist with the Vienna Chamber Orchestra, the Carinthian Symphony Orchestra, the Orchestra del Pomeriggi Musicali di Milano and the Cape Town Symphony Orchestra.
For many years now he has been exploring the concept of “the body as an instrument” and has studied Yoga, Alexander Technique, Breath control and movement control in some depth. He is a practitioner of the “Grinberg Method - Stage 1”.
Lecturer at the University of Music and Pictoral Arts in Vienna.
