Ernst Kovacic's repertory is prodigious and includes all the major works of the baroque, classical and romantic periods. His special energy and commitment to twentieth century music make him an ideal collaborator in the creation of new compositions, and composers who have written pieces for him include Friedrich Cerha, HK Gruber, Ernst Krenek, Kurt Schwertsik, Ivan Erod, Robin Holloway, Nigel Osborne and Helmut Eder. In November 2003, Ernst Kovacic gave the world premiere of Beat Furrer´s violin concerto andere stimmen with the Vienna Philharmonic under Ingo Metzmacher.
Ernst Kovacic has given concerts throughout Europe and the USA and was Artistic Director of the Vienna Chamber Orchestra from 1996-98. His engagements include appearances with the Rotterdam Philharmonic Orchestra, Prague Symphony, Detroit Symphony, Budapest Symphony, Vienna Symphony, Netherlands Radio Philharmonic, Tivoli Symphony and the Radio Symphony Orchestras of Berlin, Bayerischer Rundfunk, Sudwestfunk, Hessischer Rundfunk and Norddeutscher Rundfunk, the Philharmonia, London Symphony, Royal Philharmonic, BBC Symphony, City of Birmingham Symphony, Royal Liverpool Philharmonic, Bournemouth Symphony, Scottish Chamber, Royal Scottish National, Hallé, BBC Philharmonic, Scottish and Welsh Symphony, the London Sinfonietta, and the London Mozart Players.
He has also made many international festival appearances including Berlin, Vienna and Salzburg, BBC Proms, Edinburgh Festival, Bath, Aldeburgh, Brighton and King's Lynn Festival. Recently Ernst Kovacic toured Australia and New Zealand. He toured Japan conducting the Vienna Chamber Orchestra.
His CD's include Bernard Stevens' Violin Concerto with the BBC Philharmonic under Edward Downes, Sir Michael Tippett's Triple Concerto conducted by the composer, Mozart's complete works for violin and orchestra with the Scottish Chamber Orchestra, a recording of Violin duos and the Robin Holloway Concertor. His latest recording is of HK Gruber's Nebelsteinmusik with the Camerata Academica Salzburg and Franz Welser-Möst.
Ernst Kovacic was born in Kapfenberg, Austria and he studied at the Academy of Music in Vienna. He has won many prizes at international competitions including Geneva, Barcelona and Munich.
Ernst Kovacic lives in Vienna and plays a violin made by Giovanni Battista Guadagnini in 1754.
