Mozart created his most beautiful pieces of sacred music during those quiet early years in Salzburg with his family, before he left for Mannheim and Paris. The great Salzburg litanies and masses reflect a time of happiness. Strangely, Mozart’s “Missa Longa”, K. 262, was never as popular as his “Credo Mass” and “Sparrow Mass”, themselves both world-renowned church pieces. Nonetheless, before his “Great Mass in c minor”, the “Missa Longa” was Mozart’s most intense reflection on the Holy Mass.

The “Missa Longa’s” practically mystical choral movements and highly virtuoso arias fill Stainz’s church just as they once did Salzburg’s baroque churches. Nikolaus Harnoncourt’s Mozart interpretation is not just authentic in its replication of the original sounds, but also in the relaying of the maestro’s messages and in the long-standing cooperation with his “Mozart family”, namely with the Concentus Musicus Wien and the Arnold Schoenberg Chor.
