The Parish Church of Stainz is located in the former Monastery of the Canons Regular of St. Augustine at Stainz and the later Castle of Stainz (Schloss Stainz), an impressive building located on a hill overlooking the entire region of Western Styria. Since 1989 the famous sacral concerts of the styriarte Festival have taken place in the parish chuch of Stainz.
The church was first mentioned in 1245 in historic documents; in the 17th century the castle was built in its present form - the old Gothic church towers were preserved. The beautifully decorated church interior was only finished in late 18th century; the painting over the high altar depicting the torture of Saint Catherine is by Hans Adam Weissenkircher and the pulpit and several of the side altars were designed by the master sculptor Veit Königer.
In the impressive three-storey arcaded inner courtyard of Schloss Stainz, which is privately owned and which houses not only the parish of Stainz but also the museum of hunting (as part of the Styrian Museum Joanneum), a reception with Schilcher, the typical wine from the region, takes place before each styriarte concert.
Did you know that Schloss Stainz was bought by Erzherzog Johann in the year 1840 and has been owned by his descendants, the family Meran, since his death?
