The parish roots go back to the 11th century. Around 1140 the archbishop of Salzburg sent the first priest to Weiz.

From the Middle Ages until the end of the 18th century Weizberg was also a well known pilgrimage site.

The first church on the Weizberg was a three-aisled Romanesque basilica. Around the middle of the 14th century, the church was enlarged by a Gothic choir.

Because of the rise of the parish population and the pilgrims in the 18th century, a complete reconstruction of the church was necessary.

The new church was erected in only two years by the famous Styrian baroque architect Josef Hueber in 1757/58.

The interior decoration was made by the famous artists Josef Ritter von Mölck, Veit Königer and Jakob Peyer.
