Oh, how similar fates can be. Antonín Dvořák couldn’t win over the comely Josefina Čermáková for himself so he married her younger sister, Anna, his fate paralleling that of Mozart ninety years earlier. Both Čermáková sisters were his piano pupils and in 1865 Dvořák fell passionately in love with Josefina but his love was unrequited. He poured his pain into his first songs, the “Cypresses”, which he later arranged for string quartet. The Zemlinksy Quartet breathe life into Dvořák’s admissions of secret love in his “Terzetto op. 74” for “amateur musicians” and the “Quartet in d minor” he dedicated to Brahms.

This concert will be broadcast on Ö1 on July 22, 07:30 pm
