They dominated the “other side” of Graz as long as they had been residing in their Castle located on the western shores of the River Mur. The residence and the lives of the Princes of the Family Eggenberg were completely different to the traditional Habsburg citadel and lifestyle. The Eggenberg family were very tolerant and looked down upon by the puritan elites of Graz – who nonetheless occasionally gave in to savouring the tempting offers presented on the other side of the River Mur. The masters of Eggenberg Castle liked to entertain their guests with theatre performances and other extravaganzas, whether traditional and drastic, or exquisite and dignified. The “Fest zu Eggenberg” evokes memories of a time when travelling theatre groups from England presented the newest plays in Eggenberg Castle, when composers like Heinrich Schütz dedicated entire volumes to the Eggenberg family and the precious art treasures of Eggenberg shone in festive candle light. The Eggenberg family invites the styriarte audience into its residence for one evening – in its park, its castle and to an evening with sensual, theatrical and musical delights.

For whom this is not enough, three guided “journeys through time” offer an in-depth tour of the state rooms of Eggenberg Castle lit by candle light.

July 6 / July 13 / July 20, as of 8.30 pm

Tickets are available at EUR 25 in the styriarte ticket office.
