When Handel was 21, he travelled to Rome where he soon found himself a guest in a royal household. The Marquess Ruspoli invited Handel to stay in his “famiglia alta”, as the primary living quarters of royal households were called in baroque Italy. Handel’s quarters were equipped with every luxury and all he had to do to “earn his keep” was to compose cantatas exalting the prince and his wife and the ideal of Arcadian love between shepherd and shepherdess. Marco Vitale presents Handel’s most beautiful Roman cantatas, which he and his ensemble recently recorded on CD.
