Texts from Cosima Wagner’s diaries
Bernd Glemser, piano
Solisten des Chamber Orchestra of Europe
Senta Berger, as Cosima Wagner
Night after night she listened to her husband, Richard Wagner, playing the piano and day after day she recorded what he said about music and colleagues, about the Jews who were so hated and Beethoven who was so adored, about politics, man and art. Cosima Wagner kept record of the unimaginable, of her husband the genius – “the predator” as Hans Gál referred to him – of the loving father and the sick, suffering human being.
Senta Berger recalls all this and more as she reads excerpts from Clara’s diary. She is accompanied by Chamber Orchestra of Europe soloists, Elisabeth Kulman as lyrical Wagner singer and Bernd Glemser, an outstanding Liszt Performer. Rare chamber music selections from Wagner’s own father-in-law, Franz Liszt, add a melancholy atmosphere to the maestro’s last weeks in the Venetian palace Vendramin.
This concert will be broadcast on Ö1 on July 10,10:05 am
