Social climbers like the Sforzas in Milan shaped the image of Italy around 1500 – unscrupulous, power-hungry magnates like those depicted in Macchiavelli’s “The Prince”. The Sforzas, occasional allies of Pope Alexander VI, were known for their use of force and power politics. Ironically, it was for this proud, martial family that Luys Milán and Francesco da Milano composed their peaceful lute pieces.
