“Everyone was in for a surprise” when the Mozart family started their musical conquest of Europe. Leopold Mozart, who supported the ideas of Enlightenment, showed his children the world, and the world was to see what geniuses grew up under his wings. The Salzburg-born deputy Kapellmeister, his wife and their two children Wolferl and Nannerl were always immaculately dressed and only “associated with the nobility and other distinguished personages”. Empress Maria Theresa was the only one to look down upon them, the rest of Europe lay at the feet of this family of musicians. Even Italy was impressed by the young maestro. The son, however, sometimes failed to realise how much care his father had to invest in “project Wolfgang”: “One constantly has to plead and beg wherever one can, and ask for protection and make use of countless base situations, only to find that in the end one has hardly made enough money to pay the landlord“.
Nikolaus Harnoncourt tells the styriarte audience about the hardships Leopold Mozart had to face; Harnoncourt knows from his own experience what it means to raise a family of musicians. He reads from Leopold Mozart’s letters. Soloists of the Concentus Musicus under director Erich Höbarth play from the early oeuvre by Mozart, pieces from his years in Italy and the “Nannerl Septet” composed in Salzburg.
This concert will be broadcast on Ö1 on July 01, 07:30 pm
