On the outside, Franz Schubert was a typical Viennese family man. He was neatly nestled in the circle of his brothers and father. But he yearned for something more. He cherished the friendships he made with other young Viennese artists. These poets, painters and musicians were his “dioscuri”, his twin brothers, especially Johann Mayrhofer, who wrote antique family tragedies for him in verses which could be easily put to music. styriarte’s matinee of songs and chamber music tell the tale of these happy, early years of Schubert’s freedom to his later loneliness.
