Alfred Reiter was born in Augsburg, Germany. He began his music studies with Sacred Music before he went on to study voice at the Munich Music Academy, continued his studies later with Astrid Varnay and is also working with Hans Hotter. In 1993 he was first prize winner of the Richard Strauss-Society in Munich. Upon attending the Opernstudio of the Bavarian State Opera in Munich, Alfred Reiter started his career in Wiesbaden and Nürnberg, where he sang Sarastro (Zauberflöte), Colline (La Boheme), Sparafucile (Rigoletto), Fafner (Das Rheingold), Seneca (L’incoronazione di Poppea), Rocco (Fidelio) and Veit Pogner (Die Meistersinger).
After his debut in 1999, Alfred Reiter sang Titurel (Parsifal) with Giuseppe Sinopoli, Christoph Eschenbach and Christian Thielemann for three consecutives seasons at the Bayreuth Festival. Under Simon Rattle he made his debut with the same role at the Royal Opera House Covent Garden, London.
Important appearances include Rheingold Fafner with Jun Märkl at the Vienna State Opera and with Simon Rattle in Aix-en-Provence and Salzburg.
It was in the role of Sarastro that Alfred Reiter made important and much acclaimed debuts at the Ludwigsburg Festival, the Salzburg Festival, with Sir Charles Mackerras at the Glyndebourne Festival, with Sir Colin Davis at the Festival de San Lorenzo de El Escorial, with Philippe Jordan in London, in Vienna, Berlin, Munich, Paris, Bologna, Tokyo, Brussels, Geneva and with L. Slatkin at the Hollywood Bowl (Los Angeles) and with the production of the Festival d’Aix-en-Provence in Lisbon, Caen and Rouen.
His numerous guest performances over the last years have included the roles of Timur in “Turandot” in his US Opera debut in San Francisco, Gurnemanz at the Welsh National Opera, with Armin Jordan in Geneva and with Ulf Schirmer in Leipzig, Hunding with Ivan Fischer and with Daniel Harding, Rocco (Fidelio) and in Leonore in Bologna, Rome and Madrid, König Marke with Armin Jordan in Geneva, in Cardiff and in Cologne. He has appeared as Daland in Wagner’s “Flying Dutschman” in Brussels, he sang with Daniel Barenboim in Berlin the world creation of J.Joneleits “Metanoia”.
At the Oper Frankfurt, Alfred Reiter sang Count Waldner in “Arabella” with S. Weigle, Madruscht/Papst Pius in a new “Palestrina” with C. Petrenko, Sarastro, Gurnemanz, König Marke and Fasolt with S. Weigle. Furthermore, the bass was invited for König Marke at the Ludwigsburger Festspiele in a concert version of “Tristan und Isolde” under Michael Hofstetter as well as for Sarastro at the Staatsoper Berlin and at the Bregenz Festival 2013 and 2014.
Alfred Reiter’s versatile concert repertory includes Beethoven’s “Missa solemnis”, the “Requiem” of Mozart and Verdi as well as “The Creation” by Haydn. He has performed with Christoph Eschenbach in Hamburg and London, with Wyung-Whun Chung in Bergamo and Brescia, with Wolfgang Sawallisch in Philadelphia, New York and Munich, with Jeffrey Tate in Berlin, with Ivor Bolton in Salzburg, with Stefan Soltesz in London and with Franz Welser-Möst in Munich, with Christoph von Dohnanyi n Los Angeles, with Michael Gielen in Berlin, with Ulf Schirmer in Munich.
Projects: Fasolt in a new “Ring” under I. Metzmacher at the Geneva Opera, Graf Waldner in “Arabella” in Amsterdam and in Barcelona, Sarastro at the Bregenz Festival 2014, Eremit in concert performances of “Freischütz” at the styriarte Festival, etc.
At the Francfort Opera he sings: Sarastro, Fasolt, Arkel in “Pelleas et Méllisande”, Trulove in “The Rakes Progress”, Crespel in “Les contes d`Hofmann”.
