Johanna Winkel initially made herself an excellent reputation in the early music scene and has been consistently expanding her stylistic range to include Romantic and Modern repertoire as well.
In the 2016-2017 season she was invited to perform with musicAeterna and Teodor Currentzis (Purcell The Indian Queen), Freiburg Baroque Orchestra with Gottfried van der Goltz (Beethoven’s 9th Symphony), Musik Podium Stuttgart with Frieder Bernius (Brahms’s Requiem), the Bavarian Radio Choir and Howard Arman (in works by Mendelssohn), the International Bach Academy conducted by Hans-Christoph Rademann (in the Bruckner Te Deum) and the Bonn Beethoven Orchestra conducted by Christof Prick (in Britten’s War Requiem).
Johanna Winkel is also often heard on the opera stage. In April of 2017 she made her début appearance at the Salzburg Easter Festival under the baton of Christian Thielemann, covering the role of Gerhilde in Die Walküre; then, in the fall of 2017, she sang the same role in China with the Hong Kong Philharmonic conducted by Jaap van Zweden. She first sang the role of Leonore (Beethoven Fidelio) at the Theater für Niedersachsen in Hildesheim, where she also covered the role of Agathe (v. Weber Der Freischütz) for the first time in the 2016-2017 season.
Johanna Winkel’s recordings include the Deutsche Kammerphilharmonie Bremen’s production of Louis Spohr’s oratorio Die letzten Dinge: the CD was featured in the German Record Critics’ quarterly selection of outstanding recordings in 2014. A further recording of Schoenberg’s Moses und Aron (at the Teatro Real Madrid and the Berlin Philharmonie with SWR Symphony Orchestra conducted by Sylvain Cambreling) was nominated for the 2015 Grammy Awards. A further CD featuring works by Bach and Kuhnau with the Arion Baroque Orchestra is soon to be released. Johanna Winkel is also one of soloists regularly featured on Christoph Spering’s complete recording of Bach’s Lutheran Chorale Cantatas with Das Neue Orchester.
