Claudio Monteverdi: Madrigali Guerrieri, et Amorosi (8th Book of Madrigals)
“Oh great Ferdinand, the proud choir sings and praises your sublime virtue!” With this inscription, Claudio Monteverdi began his Eighth Book of Madrigals that he had planned to dedicate to Emperor Ferdinand II in Graz in 1637. When the Emperor suddenly passed away and his son ascended to the imperial throne, Ferdinand III became “Gran Fernando” without further ado. For Jordi Savall, the warlike and amorous madrigals of this book are some of the greatest works of music ever written – the absolute truth and beauty of human emotions.
