Das Land der Griechen …share on facebook
Early, medieval and traditional music from the Greek islands
“My soul still seeking for the land of Greece” – with these words, Johann Wolfgang von Goethe lets his Iphigenia appear in Tauris and lets her praise the country of “noble simplicity and quiet grandeur” in great verses. But the way German idealists following Goethe and Winckelmann imagined Greece was never how it really was. Dimitris Kountouras and his ensemble Ex silentio take us to the real Greece, which has lost its great history already in the era of antiquity when the Romans conquered, robbed and used it. And which has throughout most of its existence been dependent and occupied by the troops of the Roman Empire as well as by the Ottoman Empire later on. And so the music from the Greek islands often talks about suffering, mourning and the longing for freedom, to which Theodora Baka from Larissa in Thessaly gives an incomparably intense sound.
