Pure unadulterated romantic yearning: Schubert’s Unfinished, a melancholy dream, and Schumann’s Piano Concerto, a new beginning bursting with energy. Conductor: Eva Ollikainen. Piano: Markus Schirmer.
Franz Schubert: Italian Overture in C major, D 591
Symphony in B minor, D 759, Unfinished
Robert Schumann: Piano Concerto in A minor, op. 54
Typical early spring: Schubert’s Overture in the Italian Style brings the promise of new life only for the Unfinished to return to frosty tones. Tears melt the ice in this “winter journey“ for orchestra – the perfect theme for Finnish conductor Eva Ollikainen. In the second half Markus Schirmer plays Schumann’s Piano Concerto with recreation for the first time: from the wintry atmosphere of the first movement to the finale, when spring is in the air.
