Robert Schumann: Overture to “Julius Caesar” in F minor, op. 128
Felix Mendelssohn: Suite from “Ein Sommernachtstraum”, op. 21 & 61
Robert Schumann: Symphony No. 1 in B flat major, op. 38, “Spring symphony”
When Schumann composed his Symphony No. 1, it was all about “the longing for spring that overcomes us each year anew”. Giedrė Šlekytė from Vilnius is young enough to pursue this longing with plenty of vigour. The 28-year-old is the first kapellmeister at the Stadttheater Klagenfurt. As a student of the University of Music and Performing Arts Graz and the University of Music and Theatre Leipzig, she gained her first experience. Since then, she has embarked on a remarkable career, again and again with Schumann compositions in her repertoire. Before the interval, she conjures up Shakespeare’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream with Mendelssohn’s music at the Stefaniensaal.
