Joseph Haydn: Symphony in D major, Hob. I: 53, “L’Impériale”
Symphony in C major, Hob. I: 48, “Maria Theresa”
Sinfonia concertante in B flat major, Hob. I: 105
When Maria Theresa was fed up with the burdens of court life, she visited Count Esterházy at his court in Hungary, where Haydn led the greatest orchestra in the vast Empire. Stefan Gottfried and Concentus Musicus bring the Empress to life again in the Haydn symphonies that still carry her name today. In the Sinfonia concertante, on the other hand, they pay tribute to the crafty Haydn of his later years. The audience is welcome to laugh – just like the Empress did when she listened to Haydn.
