Joseph Haydn: Three String Quartets from opus 76
Nr. 1 in G major
Nr. 2 in D minor, “Quinten”
Nr. 3 in C major, “Emperor”
When Haydn composed the quartets of his Opus 76 in 1796, a different Maria Theresa was already reigning in Vienna – the extremely musical wife of Franz II, from the Habsburg generation after next. She does not appear in the “Emperor” quartet dedicated to her spouse. Nevertheless, she was moved when listening to Haydn’s variations on the famous melody, which has been usurped by the Germans. Erich Höbarth and Quatuor Mosaïques demonstrate their outstanding talent when they play Haydn’s most mature string quartets.
