Beethoven’s “Moonlight Sonata” is the perfect starting point for a piano tour through nocturnal pieces with the German piano virtuoso Bernd Glemser.
Ludwig van Beethoven: Sonata in C sharp minor, op. 27/2, “Moonlight Sonata”
Franz Liszt: Liebestraum / Frühlingsnacht (after Schumann) / Mephisto Waltz No. 1 / La lugubre gondola No. 1
Wagner paraphrases: Elsas Traum (from “Lohengrin”), O du mein holder Abendstern (from “Tannhäuser”), Isoldes Liebestod (from “Tristan und Isolde”)
Frédéric Chopin: Nocturnes, Ballade No. 1 in G minor, op. 23
When trying to imagine Beethoven at the piano, the “Moonlight Sonata” is what usually comes to mind. The German piano virtuoso Bernd Glemser has chosen the famous “Sonata quasi una fantasia” as the first piece in an outstanding programme of nocturnal music from the Romantic age.
