It is easy to underestimate Peter Rosegger. But when Johannes Silberschneider reads from the “Schriften des Waldschulmeisters” of 1875, when Rosegger’s friend – the composer Wilhelm Kienzl – joins him, and when Rosegger’s poems resound in Anton von Webern’s settings, the importance of this great figure of Austrian literature becomes tangible. When Rosegger died on 26 June 1918 in Krieglach, it marked the end of an era. But what remains is plenty of material for a long evening of readings, music and films about the places that he shaped and that shaped him.
