Reading from Joseph Roth‘s novel “Radetzkymarsch”
Johannes Brahms: from Trio in A minor, op. 114, Clarinet Sonata in E flat major, op. 120/2
Hans Gál: Variations on a Viennese Heurigenmelodie, op. 9
Alban Berg: Adagio from the chamber concert
Fritz Kreisler: Liebesleid / Liebesfreud
Johann Strauß: Radetzky March, op. 228
Joseph Roth’s novel about the “hero of Solferino“ and his shy grandson Carl Joseph von Trotta perfectly describes the twilight of the monarchy and its fall during the First World War. Peter Simonischek reads key passages from the 1932 book, which – according to Marcel Rein-Ranicki – is one of the 20 most influential German-language novels. Eszter Haffner and her ensemble passionately conjure up the musical images to the story: late Brahms and early Berg, “Heurigenlieder” and of course the “Radetzky March”.
