On the fortepiano, Stefan Gottfried lets Franz Schubert’s dances become what they once were to his friends: music for the soul. Moritz von Schwind went wild when he heard new dances by Schubert. The composer played “perhaps twenty Germans, each lovelier than the last, gallant, sweet, bacchanalian and fugal” for him in 1824. In Graz and Linz, in Steyr and Vienna: Schubert’s friends gathered around the composer whenever he played his dances. At Schloss Gamlitz, the intimate atmosphere of a Styrian country castle is added to the mix – pure romance.
