Franz Schubert: Symphony No. 5 in B flat major, D 485
Wolfgang Redik presents Schubert’s Fifth Symphony without a conductor, just as Otto Hatwig, leader of the “Orchesterverein”, did when it was first performed in 1816 at the Schottenhof in Vienna. In the first part of the programme, the musicians split into two groups: a Norwegian string ensemble à la Grieg and a Bohemian wind ensemble à la Dvořák. Altogether, three works of Romantic light music of the very best.
