George Frideric Handel: Water music, Suite No. 1 in F major
Georg Philipp Telemann: Hamburger Ebb’ und Fluth
Orchestral suite “La Bourse” (The bourse)
George Frideric Handel: Water music, Suite No. 2 in D major
The Concentus Musicus will be spared the true exertions of Handel’s “Water music”: Stefan Gottfried and his Viennese colleagues don’t have to climb in a boat to celebrate the 300th birthday of Handel’s greatest orchestral dances. What sweetened a boat trip on the Thames for King George I on 17 July 1717 still fascinates every audience 300 years later. The captivating “Water Music” that Handel’s childhood friend Telemann came up with for the illustrious harbour authority of Hamburg is far less well-known: antique deities are up to mischief in the mouth of the Elbe, while the “Hamburger Ebb’ und Fluth” get the bodies of water flowing.
