About the artist
A Voice for New Sounds
Countertenor Johannes Wieners has long been deeply committed to contemporary music. He studied double bass, voice, and contemporary music in Rostock and Graz, and began his stage career while still a student. At the age of 25, he made his debut at the Berlin State Opera (Staatsoper Unter den Linden) in the world premiere of Oscar Strasnoy’s Robinson, performing the role of Die Jugend. He subsequently appeared in the title role of Witold in Strasnoy’s Geschichte at Oper Graz and sang the role of Di in Diana Syrse’s To Fall Safely at the Staatstheater Braunschweig.
Further engagements have taken him to the Magdeburg Telemann Festival, the Neuköllner Oper Berlin, Semperoper Dresden, and Theater an der Wien, including collaborations with the Berlin-based ensemble lautten compagney. Throughout his career, he has worked with numerous distinguished conductors, directors, and composers, including Chloé Dufresne, Bruno Ferrandis, Wolfgang Katschner, Bas Wiegers, Anna Bergmann, Lars Marcel Braun, Bernhard Lang, and Oscar Strasnoy.
Johannes Wieners is also a founding member of the early music ensemble Due sopra il Basso and performs with the experimental music theatre collective Äh-Musik, which explores and contextualizes stylistic differences and hierarchies in music. In addition to his performing career, he is active as a composer. In 2019, he received a First Federal Prize at the German competition Jugend komponiert. His works have been performed at venues including Oper Graz and resonanzraum Hamburg.
In 2026, he will appear in projects at Theater Winterthur, Heidelberger Frühling, the Munich Biennale, the Handel Festival Halle, Styriarte, and Neue Oper Wien, where he will once again perform the title role of Witold in Strasnoy’s Geschichte.
