Tobias Wögerer, born in 1991 in Linz, is the winner of the 10th MDR conducting competition and has been the assistant conductor of the Gustav Mahler Jugendorchester since the 2018/19 season. From September 2022 he will be conductor in residence at the Volksoper Wien.

After finishing his studies in Cello in Salzburg und Vienna, he studied orchestral conducting with Nicolás Pasquet and Ekhart Wycik in Weimar and with Johannes Schaefli in Zurich. Through masterclasses with Paavo Järvi, Ole Kristian Ruud, Peter Gülke or Mark Heron Tobias Wögerer has further broadened his musical education.

In recent years Tobias Wögerer received invitations from renowned orchestras across Europe and has conducted the Gulbenkian Orchestra Lisbon, the Staatskapelle Weimar, the Brucknerorchester Linz, the Berner Symphonie Orchester the Jenaer Philharmonie, the Brandenburger Symphoniker, the Göttinger Symphonie Orchester, and the Philharmonie Salzburg. Besides that, he collaborated with renowned artists like Angela Denoke, Günther Groissböck, Benjamin Schmid, Olga Scheps, Anika Vavic or Nikolai Tokarev and gave concerts throughout Europe, China and Japan.

At the young age of 25 he led his first opera production at the international Brucknerfest Linz. In 2013 he founded the Symphonic Ensemble Aktuell, a group of friends and colleagues from across Europe who meet as a large musical family to perform symphonic repertoire at the highest level.

From 2017 to 2019 he undertook the musical leadership of the Operncamps der Wiener Philharmoniker at the Salzburger Festspiele and in summer of 2019 he became Music Director of the austrian orchestra-camp Jeunesse musicale.

In 2019 Tobias Wögerer celebrated his appointment as assistant conductor of the Gustav Mahler Jugendorchester with two successful concerts in Lisbon. 2020 he replaced Ingo Metzmacher and led the orchestra’s summer tour through Italy.

As assistant conductor he has had the privilege of working closely with renowned maestri including Herbert Blomstedt, Daniele Gatti, Manfred Honeck and Jonathan Nott.

Tobias Wögerer won the 10th conducting competition of the MDR-Sinfonieorchester in December of 2019 and made his debut with the orchestra in June 2021. A highlight of the previous season presents his debut with the Wiener Symphoniker as part of the “Wohnzimmer-Konzerte” at Wiener Konzerthaus in December 2020.

After a first successful collaboration with Mirga Gražinytė-Tyla in Summer 2021, he has been invited to assist her at a production of Janáček’s “The cunning little Vixen” at the Bayerische Staatsoper in January 2022. Furthermore, he conducted a production of Peter Maxwell Davies’ "The Lighthouse" at the Deutsches Nationaltheater Weimar and will assist Teodor Currentzis at the Salzburg Festival in the summer of 2022.
