Baritone Jan Kukal

The young baritone has been studying singing at the Academy of Performing Arts in his home city of Prague since 2021. Jan Kukal gained his first stage experience with the Collegium Vocale Salzburg and in opera roles at the J. K. Tyl Theatre in Pilsen. His greatest successes include 1st prize at the Bohuslav Martinů Singing Competition in Prague and reaching the final of the international competition ‘Let's Sing’ at the National Opera and Ballet Theatre in Sofia.

The young Czech began his musical education with violin lessons in Prague, his voice was then moulded at the Prague Conservatory, the Academy of Performing Arts in Prague with Zuzana Lászlóová and is now under the guidance of Ivan Kushjer.

Jan has been honoured with several prizes (1st prize at the 11th Bohuslav Martinu Song Competition and 2nd prize at the Imrich Godin Singing Competition ‘Juventus canti’ 2017) and was a finalist at the international competition ‘Let's Sing’ at the State Opera in Sofia.

Jan has already appeared on the opera stage in the double role of Muezzin and Hlasatel in Dvořák's ‘Armida’ at the Pilsen Theatre, where he also sang the world premiere of Sylvie Bodorova's ‘Quo vadis’. At the National Theatre in Ostrava he sang Silvano in Verdi's ‘Un ballo in maschera’. Jan is a member of the vocal ensemble Schola Gregoriana Pragensis under Petr Eben and has performed with the Prague Symphony Orchestra under Jan Kučera in a concert with excerpts from Dvořák's ‘Rusalka’.
