Jed Wentz

For decades, Jed Wentz has been passionately dedicated to historically informed performance practice. As a flautist, conductor, researcher and teacher, he seeks to foster a vibrant dialogue between music, language and the stage. His work combines scholarly depth with artistic curiosity – always in search of the kind of expression that brings the soundscapes of the past to life in a moving way in the here and now.

Specialist in historically informed performance practice

Throughout a long career, Jedidiah Wentz has worked as a flutist, conductor and teacher exclusively within the discipline of Early Music performance practice. His current research revolves around the relationship between music and acting, 1680-1930. He is assistant professor at the Academy of Creative and Performing Arts, Leiden University and teaches at the Royal Conservatory of The Hague. Since 2012 he is artistic advisor to the Utrecht Early Music Festival in The Netherlands.

Jed Wentz studied flute (both modern and historical instruments) at the Oberlin Conservatory of Music and continued his studies with Barthold Kuijken at the Royal Conservatory in The Hague.

In 1992, he founded the Musica ad Rhenum ensemble, through which he has realised his vision of Baroque music, recording numerous CDs as a soloist and conductor.

He regularly publishes articles in renowned journals on topics related to historical performance practice, rhetoric, gesture and dance in the 18th century.
