Miriam Kutrowatz

The freshness and expressiveness of her singing, combined with great acting skills, predestine the young Viennese for opera. She made her debut as Zerlina in 'Don Giovanni in Nöten' at the Styriarte, followed by Vivaldi's 'Magnificat' and Handel's 'Alexander's Feast'. In the 2022/23 season, she will make her debut at the Vienna State Opera as Mozart's Papagena and most recently appeared at the Zurich Opera in Handel's Serse.

FRESH SOPRANO, BORN FOR THE STAGE

Career

Born in Vienna, she studied at the University of Music and Performing Arts in her hometown and is a three-time winner of the 2019 Cesti Competition for Baroque Opera. A semi-finalist in the 2020 Glyndebourne Opera Cup, she completed her bachelor's degree with Edith Lienbacher at the University of Music and Performing Arts Vienna and continued her master's studies with Florian Boesch. She has attended masterclasses with Marijana Mijanovic, Brigitte Fassbaender, Laura Aikin, Linda Watson and Malcolm Martineau, among others, and trained in contemporary dance with Austrian choreographer Doris Uhlich, with whom she was part of the dance piece 'Unkraut' at the ImPulsTanz Festival Vienna.

On stage

The Viennese singer began her career in 2020 as a member of the young ensemble of the Theater an der Wien (JET), where she made her highly successful stage debut at the Wiener Kammeroper as Idaspe in Vivaldi's Il Bajazet. She has since appeared there and at the Theater an der Wien as Niece 1 (Peter Grimes), Zerlina (Mozart, Don Giovanni), Marie (Lortzing, Der Waffenschmied) and L'Amour (Gluck, Orphée).

At the Salzburg Festival 2021, Miriam Kutrowatz made her debut in the children's opera ‘Vom Stern der nicht leuchten konnte’ (E. Naske) where she performed the title role of the star.

Concert Stage

Concert highlights include Handel's oratorio Il Trionfo del Tempo e del Disinganno (Bellezza) at the Gärtnerplatztheater in Munich, Mozart's Requiem and Bach's B Minor Mass at the Musikverein and Konzerthaus in Vienna, Handel's Messiah at the Musikverein in Graz, Mahler's 8th Symphony at the Elbphilharmonie in Hamburg under Semyon Bychkov and La Lotta d'Ercole con Acheloo (Steffani) at the Philharmonie in Cologne. In 2022 Miriam Kutrowatz filled in at short notice for 'Christmas in Vienna' at the Vienna Konzerthaus.

In 2022-2024 she was a member of the Opera Studio of the Vienna State Opera, where she made her debut as Papagena and appeared in roles such as Barbarina (Le Nozze di Figaro), Sand and Taumännchen (Hänsel and Gretel), Pousette (Manon), Falke, Guardian of the Threshold of the Temple and 1. Dienerin (Die Frau ohne Schatten), Gianetta (L'Elisir d'Amore), Hanne (Die Jahreszeiten), Blumenmädchen (Parsifal) and Konstanze (Die Entführung aus dem Serail für Kinder). For the latter she was nominated for the Austrian Music Theatre Award 2024 in the category 'Young Female Talent'. She has sung under renowned conductors such as Christian Thielemann, Adam Fischer, Bertrand de Billy, Phillipe Jordan, Alexander Soddy, Gianluca Capuano and Pablo Heras-Casado.

Repertoire

Other works in her repertoire include the cantata Exultate Jubilate (W. A. Mozart), which she has performed at the Vienna Konzerthaus and with the Mozarteum Orchestra Salzburg, Mahler's 4th Symphony and Vivaldi's Gloria.

Past roles on the opera stage also include Alinda in Cavalli's Il Giasone, Gretel in Humperdinck's Hansel and Gretel at the Schönbrunn Palace Theatre and Morgana in Handel's Alcina at the ‘JOpera’ festival summer.

Next season Miriam Kutrowatz will return to the Zurich Opera House as Atalanta in Handel's Serse, after making her debut there in May 2024 as Eurydice in Monteverdi's L'Orfeo. She will also appear at the Komische Oper Berlin as Edwige in Offenbach's operetta Robinson Crusoe and make her debut at Het Concertgebouw with Mahler's 8th Symphony under Klaus Mäkela.

As part of the Johann Strauss Jubilee Year, she will appear in Strauss's Zigeunerbaron and in a commemorative concert at the Vienna Musikverein. With Brahms' Ein deutsches Requiem, also at the Vienna Musikverein and at the Philharmonie Krakow, the soprano adds another important work to her repertoire. Under the baton of Semyon Bychkov, Miriam Kutrowatz will perform Bach's Mass in B Minor at the Accademia Nazionale di Santa Cecilia and the Czech Philharmonic in Prague.

Guest at the Styriarte Festival

At the Styriarte 2020, the soprano appeared as Zerlina in Mozart's Don Giovanni in Nöten under Michael Hoffstetter. Since then, she has returned to the Styriarte Festival in various programmes: in 2021 with Handel's Dixit Dominus and Vivaldi's Magnificat under Jordi Savall, in 2022 with Charpentier's Te Deum and Bach's Magnificat, in 2023 with Beethoven's Cantata on the Death of Emperor Joseph II and Mozart's Coronation Mass, and in 2024 with Mozart's Great Mass in C Minor again under Jordi Savall and Handel's Alexander's Feast under Alfredo Bernardini.
