Passionate Church Musician

Career

Peter Tiefengraber was born in 1991 and grew up in Pinkafeld, Burgenland (Austria). After receiving his first musical training in piano from his uncle and in organ at the local music school, he enrolled as an extraordinary student at the Institute Oberschützen of the University of Music and Performing Arts Graz in 2005.

In 2010, he began studying organ and instrumental pedagogy with Ulrike Theresia Wegele at the Joseph Haydn Conservatory in Eisenstadt. From 2011 onwards, he pursued studies in music theory with Gesine Schröder and later continued his organ studies with Pier Damiano Peretti at the University of Music and Performing Arts Vienna, graduating with distinction in 2017. Upon completion of these studies, he was awarded the degree of Magister artium. Since 2017, he has also been studying Catholic Church Music.

Important artistic inspiration came from masterclasses with renowned organists including Michael Radulescu, Ludger Lohmann, Jon Laukvik, Jürgen Essl, Luigi Ferdinando Tagliavini, Jean-Claude Zehnder and Michel Bouvard.

organist and theorist

As both an organist and music theorist, Tiefengraber is active nationally and internationally. He has published several musicological and theoretical essays, including studies on Johann Nepomuk David’s Gottesminnelieder and Anton Bruckner’s metric numerals. As a concert organist, he has performed in Austria, Germany, France and Scotland, and has appeared in televised and broadcast liturgical services.

Since 2015, he has regularly served as guest organist at Vienna’s Augustinian Church and at Eisenstadt Cathedral. Another important aspect of his work is choral and orchestral conducting. With the choir of the Parish Church of Pinkafeld, he has presented major orchestral masses by Mozart and Haydn on an annual basis and has conducted large-scale works from the orchestral repertoire.

In September 2021, Peter Tiefengraber was appointed Director of Church Music at St. Augustine’s Church in Vienna, assuming overall responsibility for its church music programme.
