Styriarte goes folk! And more.
This time it’s about Volxmusik. That’s to say traditional music, whether from Kalwang or Cameroon, and what goes into creating it. A new approach to folk music. It’s all about the mix! We’re looking for five young bands who perform traditional music in a novel way.

WE ARE LOOKING FOR
five young bands with a new take on global music traditions

Innovation meets tradition – the Styriarte meets new folk music. Are you an up-and-coming band who adds a personal touch to new folk music, inventing something entirely new? Are you young musicians who rock heart and soul, groove, yodel, sing, make some noise or just make music? The Styriarte Sessions stage is all yours.

What counts as folk music? Melodies, instruments, rhythms or song texts which originate in a cultural tradition – no matter whether it sounds like Kalwang or Cameroon, no matter whether you play the flute or the accordeon. Folk music grows in our midst over generations; it tells stories of a cultural community. We’re looking for this traditional musical language in your individual, innovative sound.

• Solo acts and bands

• Requirement: you must be available to perform on July 16, 2024

• Deadline: send in your application with info about yourself and your planned set (20 minutes) by 20.05.24

• Please include links to 2-3 audio recordings and at least 1 video of a live performance (eg Spotify, YouTube or Instagram)

SET UP AND FEES

A jury will select five acts from all applications for the event on 16th July.
The Styriarte will provide stage, sound and lighting technology.
Courtesy of the Raiffeisen Kulturförderung, each band selected for performance at the Styriarte Sessions will receive 500 euros.
In addition, prize money will be awarded as follows:

• 3rd place: EUR 1.000 

• 2nd place: EUR 1.5000

• 1st place: EUR 2.500 

The ranking will be decided by a live audience vote.
