Afrika Mamas
As ambassadors of their culture, the seven singers of Afrika Mamas travel the globe. With the emancipated voice of South Africa and closely linked to the vocal traditions of the Zulu people, they represent the modern lives of African women and have already been nominated three times for the South African Music Award.
About the artists
A Cappella Zulu Sextet
The "Afrika Mamas" ensemble was founded in 1998. Its songs reflect the fascinating, polyphonic vocal tradition of the Zulu. The sextet has collaborated with numerous African musicians. Since their formation, the musicians have also won a large audience in many parts of the world, touring China and various European and African countries. They travelled with the South African Olympic team to the Olympic Games in London, where they performed together with other South African artists. The singers are all single mothers. They address their social experiences in their music and are particularly committed to equal rights for women in South African society.
