Career

The Austrian bass-baritone Philipp Mayer began his musical training with studies in classical percussion and classical voice at the Anton Bruckner Private University in Linz. In Berlin, he was trained by Roman Trekel, Anneliese Fried, and Albert Pesendorfer at the Hanns Eisler School of Music and the Berlin University of the Arts.

On stage

Since the 2021/2022 season, he has been a member of the ensemble at the Staatstheater Cottbus. There, he appears in roles such as Figaro (Le nozze di Figaro), Daland (Der fliegende Holländer), Ochs (Der Rosenkavalier), the King (The Love for Three Oranges), Sarastro / Speaker (The Magic Flute), and Zuniga (Carmen).

At the Théâtre de la Monnaie in Bern, during his permanent engagement from 2019 to 2021, he impressed audiences and critics in roles including Uberto (La serva padrona), Kezal (The Bartered Bride), and Bartolo (The Barber of Seville). From 2017 to 2019, still during his studies, the Staatstheater Wiesbaden engaged him for five guest appearances, where he also sang Zuniga in Carmen.

He is a two-time prizewinner of the Kammeroper Schloss Rheinsberg and made his debut at the Bad Orb Opera Academy Festival as Kaspar in Der Freischütz. Further solo engagements followed at the Deutsche Oper Berlin (Unsichtbare Fronten, R. Krampe), at the Berlin Philharmonie with the Berlin Philharmonic (Das Telefon, Gian Carlo Menotti), and at the Berlin State Opera (A Monteverdi Project under Saar Magal).

As a concert singer, he has performed at the Berlin Cathedral and the Konzerthaus Berlin, and recently sang his first Mozart Requiem under Erwin Ortner.

Recital work with pianist Justine Eckhaut, the founding of the vocal ensemble Walhalla zum Seidlwirt, training in contemporary dance, the direction of several festivals, and work as a director and playwright reflect the singer’s versatility.

In 2023, he founded the Opera Festival Schärding, a festival dedicated to both traditional and contemporary opera.

In Styriarte 2027, Philipp Mayer is the curator for Klassik+ at the Haus Styriarte.
