Matija Chlupacek studied recorder with Prof. Maurice van Lieshout at the University of Music and Theatre Munich (Bachelor 2021) and with Prof. Dorothee Oberlinger at the Mozarteum University Salzburg (Master 2025).
Born in German-Slovenia, he was already a regular participant in the summer courses of Swiss recorder player Maurice Steger in Solothurn during his school days at the Maximiliansgymnasium in Munich, in the company of renowned early music teachers such as Reinhard Goebel, Hille Perl, Diego Ares and others. Later, he regularly attended Steger's annual masterclasses at the Menuhin Festival Academy in Gstaad. Even before he began his studies, he had already won several prizes at regional and national music competitions.
Matija Chlupacek is one of the founders of Ensemble Interchange, winner and scholarship holder of the German Music Competition 2024, and the early music ensemble Stereotype Baroque, which has been based in Munich since 2022 and regularly performs in regional concert series. In addition to chamber music performances with his ensembles, he also makes guest appearances in opera productions and corporate cultural events, including at the Saarbrücken State Theatre (2023), the Audi Summer Concerts in Ingolstadt (2024), the Gärtnerplatztheater Munich (2025) and the Nuremberg State Theatre (2025). He took over the musical direction for a new music theatre production (‘Hamlet’) at the Mozarteum Salzburg in 2023. Matija Chlupacek made his debut as a film actor (with recorder) in a supporting role in the cinema production ‘Leibniz - Chronik eines verschollenen Bildes’ by Edgar Reitz, with film music by Swedish composer Henrik Ajax (premiere 2025). From 2026, he will be one of 12 academy students in the 15th year of the 3-year TONALi Stage Academy.
Equally at home with early and contemporary music, Matija also works with composers of contemporary classical music to create a repertoire for his instrument.
