About the Artist
Preference for new and baroque music
Shaghayegh Shahrabi was born in Tehran/Iran, where she received her basic music education in playing the violin and oboe. At the age of 18, she was offered a university place at the Cologne Musikhochschule and left Iran to complete her Bachelor's degree in Cologne with Regine Held and Christian Wetzel.
A special focus of her studies was the study of New Music. She was trained by Peter Veale, the oboist of the Ensemble MusikFabrik Cologne, among others, and has since played in this ensemble as well as in numerous other renowned special ensembles for new music. She was a participant in the Darmstadt Summer Courses for New Music and was a prize-winner at the John Cage Competition in Halberstadt in 2016. Shaghayegh Shahrabi completed her Master's degree with Matthias Bäcker at the Musikhochschule in Weimar and, in addition to various solo concerts, played as a chamber musician in many different chamber music formations.
Already during her Master studies, Shaghayegh Shahrabi discovered her love to baroque music and began to study intensively the baroque oboe.
Since 2020, she has also been completing a Master's course in baroque oboe with Wolfgang Day - again at the Cologne Musikhochschule - and has already been invited to various baroque music festivals with her new instrument. In addition, she has been studying in the Master's programme for New Music with Susanne Blumenthal since 2021 with the ensemble ColLAB, with which she recently received the special prize for the best interpretation of the work at the Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy University Competition.
