An American dream in the sound of strings:
It is thanks to Hollywood that Samuel Barber’s Adagio has become the most exquisitely beautiful piece of mourning music in film. Mei-Ann Chen combines it with Stravinsky’s cheerful Concerto for a Park in Washington and with a furious string dance by New Yorker Jessie Montgomery: from the “tinkling”, the “strum” of the plucked strings, she conjures up a kaleidoscope of rousing rhythms and melodies. Michael Hell shows how different a harpsichord sounds when Philip Glass lays his minimalist music upon it.
