In China the tragic but beautiful story of the Butterfly Lovers, the couple who can only come together as butterflies, moves children and adults alike to tears. The premiere of this legendary violin concerto was played by a young violinist in Shanghai in 1959. In 2025 renowned American violinist Melissa White follows in her footsteps. And Mei-Ann Chen and the orchestra also tell beautiful love stories from Paris at the time of the Belle Époque.

As a sparkling rising star of the US classical music scene, the dynamic violinist impresses as a soloist, in renowned international orchestras and in chamber music formations. After Carnegie Hall and the White House, Melissa White regularly tours the USA, Europe, Africa and Asia with her multi-Grammy award-winning Harlem Quartet.

Recreation is special in many ways: consisting of musicians whose nationalities range from Japan to Venezuela, most of the members received part of their training in Graz. After its formation in 2002, the collective played unique halls such as the Alte Oper Frankfurt and worked with outstanding conductors.

Mei-Ann Chen

Conductor

Born in Taiwan, Mei-Ann Chen has lived in the US since 1989 and holds a doctorate in music (conducting) and a master’s degree in violin performance. One of America’s most promising young conductors, she was the first woman to win the Malko International Conductors Competition and has been appointed chief conductor of Recreation Graz beginning fall 2021.
