Schubert à la Mahler
The adagietto from Mahler’s 5th and Schubert’s great Quartet in D minor have one thing in common: we inevitably associate them with images of end time and death, “Death in Venice” and “Death and the Maiden”. And yet Mahler intended the adagietto as a declaration of his love for Alma Schindler and his arrangement of Schubert’s quartet as a demonstration of the vital energy of a string quartet. Wolfgang Redik plays Schubert à la Mahler with the Recreation strings and delivers a brilliant performance as soloist in Mendelssohn’s early Concerto in D minor.
