In praise of the donkey

Music in praise of the donkey from the Middle Ages to the present day, from the Catalan folk song “Josep i Maria” to the spiritual ”Ride On, King Jesus“ and much more.

The donkey – a fascinating animal, known for its strength and stamina but also for being humble and stubborn. In myth, folk song and spiritual stories it is portrayed as a good friend to humans. Arianna Savall and her ensemble show how the donkey has been sung about as a symbol of simplicity and devotion from medieval times to the present day. They recall the part it plays in the Bible, at Jesus’s  birth and his entry into Jerusalem. They revive the Sephardic tradition and create colourful images from the time of the Baroque.
