Content

leave the thorns, pluck the rose

“Lascia la spina“ – leave the thorns, pluck the rose. In Handel’s most beautiful aria, this is how Pleasure cajoles a young woman who denies Truth. She does not recognise herself when she looks in the mirror. Time and Truth are up in arms about this. They want to convince the fickle “Bellezza” of her transience and lead her back on to the path of virtue. With excerpts from Handel’s first oratorio, four wonderful singers led by Michael Hell recall Rome 1707, when, with his genius for melody, the young Handel made captivating, topical musical theatre of an ancient theme: Time brings Truth to light.
