Content
Orient and Occident
Spanish guitar music of the 16th and 17th centuries by Francisco Guerau (Gallardas), Santiago de Murcia (Fandango), Diego Ortiz (Villanos, Folias), Gaspar Sanz (Canarios) and others.
Rafael Catalá is a specialist in the guitar music of his homeland, which is characterised by influences from the Orient and the Occident. In his new programme 'Mare nostrum' with the ensemble Música Ibérica, the guitar is joined by oriental frame drums and the Swedish nyckelharpa. Baroque lute music is fused with elements of flamenco, jácaras, fandangos and other Spanish dances, enriched with oriental rhythms and elements of improvisation.
The high-calibre ensemble weaves Mediterranean and medieval soundscapes into a virtuoso journey through time. The celebrated specialists, led by Spanish guitarist and composer Rafael Catalá, explore what fascinates us between Orient and Occident and interpret it with what inspires us, from early music to jazz.
