fantastic programme of wholly unaccompanied singing
Gesualdo near Naples, Holy Week 1611: the responsories for the Tenebrae of Holy Week composed by Don Carlo Gesualdo, Prince of Venosa, are first sung by a few select male voices, just like the English ensemble The Gesualdo Six today. The shrill dissonances, terrifying plunges into darkness and harsh light of Gesualdo’s music contrast with the mild laments of the English composer Tallis and the Spanish composer Victoria. Modern a-cappella arrangements by Judith Bingham and Owain Park round off this fantastic programme of wholly unaccompanied singing, which has the Lamb of God at its centre.
