a musician’s entire life in one hour of music

When Austria’s Empress Marie Therèse, granddaughter of the legendary Maria Theresia, fell in love with Haydn’s Theresienmesse, the monks had already been gone from Stainz for 15 years. Thanks to Archduke John the monastery and church were preserved. Thanks to the Styriarte they are the venue for a festival of sacred song every year. In Stainz Michael Hofstetter conducts Haydn’s earliest work of church music and one of his last masses – a musician’s entire life in one hour of music.

Francesca Lombardi Mazzulli

Soprano

In her native home Italy, the baroque opera specialist was taught by legends such as Mirella Freni and Luciano Pavarotti. With her temperament, dynamics and acting skills, the internationally sought-after soprano now brings new splendour to many a 17th and 18th century gem and was awarded the finalist prize at the Handel Singing Competition in London.

Maria Hegele

Mezzo-Soprano

Born on the German shores of Lake Constance, the mezzo-soprano returned to the Vienna Volksoper in the 2024/2025 season as Prince Orlofsky in Johann Strauss' ‘Die Fledermaus’, where she was already one of the first singers in the opera studio. The singer studied at the International Opera Studio of the Royal College of Music in London with Dinah Harris and before that at the Mozarteum with Barbara Bonney.

Aco Bišćević

Tenor

In both lyrical and heroic roles, the ‘haute-contre’ moves with his high, elegant French tenor. Whether at the Teatro alla Scala in Milan, the Bach Festival in Lausanne or the Salzburg Festival - the Slovenian voice artist has shone since his studies at the Mozarteum with major opera roles as well as intimate recitals, whereby the Schubert admirer also enjoys accompanying himself on the piano.

Damien Gastl

Baritone

The youthful, vital baritone left a lasting impression on the Styriarte audience at his brilliant "Don Giovanni" debut in 2020. Only a little later, in autumn 2020, he made the leap into the opera studio ensemble of his hometown of Strasbourg. In addition, the young Frenchman has already made guest appearances in oratorio productions by renowned German orchestras.

Arnold Schoenberg Chor

Choir

The differentiation and plasticity with which Erwin Ortner's hand-picked ensemble of voices realises choral works from all epochs is unrivalled. The Arnold Schoenberg Choir, founded in 1972 and a regular guest at the Styriarte festival for decades, has won countless prizes - including the Grammy in 2002 for a St Matthew Passion under Nikolaus Harnoncourt.

Styriarte Festival Orchestra

Orchestra

Styriarte's orchestral "Supergroup" is made up of changing international star guests and musicians from the first-class fund of the Recreation orchestra, depending on need and occasion. The orchestra's tuning and choice of instruments follow the historical requirements of the works performed.

Michael Hofstetter

Conductor

The Munich-born conductor, born in 1961, has been a very close friend of Styriarte since his highly acclaimed work as chief conductor of the Recreation Orchestra (2012 - 2016). His excellence in the historical practice of baroque and classical music as well as his inspiring enthusiasm on the podium are in demand on the world's great concert and opera stages.
