Aris Quartet

Whether revisiting great masterpieces or discovering entirely new repertoire, the four Frankfurt musicians demonstrate why critics consider them to be among the elite of chamber musicians. Since its founding in 2009, the Aris Quartet has played with the same lineup, growing into an ensemble of the highest precision and homogeneity.

About the quartet

Neben den Musikern stehen zwei große Scheinwerfer. Die Musiker tragen elegante Konzertkleidung und spielen auf ihren Instrumenten.

Expressive, dynamic, impressive: founded in 2009 as a youth ensemble, the Aris Quartet is now at home on international stages. With its unmistakable sound, it has long been one of the top chamber music ensembles.

On Stage

The four German musicians have performed at venues such as London's Wigmore Hall, the Elbphilharmonie Hamburg, the Herbst Theatre San Francisco, the Concertgebouw Amsterdam, the Gulbenkian Lisbon, the Festspielhaus Baden-Baden, and the Philharmonie de Paris. The quartet has also toured the USA several times, with stops in Los Angeles and San Francisco, among other cities. Their chamber music partners are also top-class: Christiane Karg, Tabea Zimmermann, Daniel Müller-Schott, Eckart Runge, Kit Armstrong, and Nils Mönkemeyer. In 2023, the Aris Quartet programmed an entire Advent weekend as part of the Mecklenburg-Vorpommern Festival, with a total of six concerts over three days, presenting musical treasures from Bach and Hensel to Schubert, Ligeti, and jazz, together with musical companions and friends such as cellist Eckart Runge and pianist Omer Klein.

Repertoire

In addition to the classical repertoire, the ensemble also devotes itself to cross-genre projects, such as those with jazz pianist Omer Klein. From the very beginning, the musicians have also placed a special focus on contemporary music. Composers such as Lukas Ligeti, Gerald Resch, Misato Mochizuki, and Pierre-Dominique Ponnelle entrust the quartet with the world premieres of their works.

Recordings

In addition to regular appearances on radio and TV, the Aris Quartet has released six albums since 2015, all of which have been highly acclaimed by the trade press. Most recently, “Attacca” on the Genuin label with Beethoven's Op. 59 No. 1 and Gerald Resch's String Quartet No. 3, dedicated to them. In October 2023, Deutsche Grammophon/STAGE + released quartets by Hensel and Mendelssohn.

Teaching

In addition to their extensive international concert activities, all four musicians now teach at the Frankfurt University of Music and Performing Arts (HfMDK) as lecturers, passing on their artistic knowledge and wealth of experience to their students.

Awards

With numerous first prizes at renowned competitions, the Aris Quartet quickly achieved international breakthrough. In 2019, the ensemble was named “ECHO Rising Stars” by the European Concert Hall Organisation and in 2022 received the Mamlok Foundation Prize for Contemporary Music. The fact that their playing also appeals to listeners is proven by the audience awards that the four musicians have won, for example at the ARD Competition in Munich (where they also won second prize) and at the Mecklenburg-Vorpommern Festival in 2019. The musicians were also named among the BBC's “New Generation Artists” and won five prizes at the ARD International Music Competition in Munich.
