A spirit of experimentation and creativity

Julia Willeitner, baroque cello
Felix Ritter, lute

The Ensemble

Friederike Vollert (recorder), Matija Chlupacek (recorder), Sara Roque Coroado (Baroque cello), Felix Ritter (lute) and Tung-Han Hu (harpsichord) are the founding members of Ensemble Interchange.

Awards

The five musicians, whose roots lie in Germany, Slovenia, Portugal and Taiwan, have won prizes at prestigious competitions such as Musica Antiqua Bruges, the International Handel Competition in Göttingen and the Johann Sebastian Bach Competition in Leipzig. They perform throughout Germany and internationally.

Inspired by Willem de Kooning’s expressive painting Interchange (1955), the ensemble made its debut under this name at the German Music Competition. The musicians were immediately awarded a scholarship by the German Music Council, along with a place in the organisation’s concert promotion scheme, as well as the Special Prize of the Freiburg Ensemble Academy. Since then, the ensemble has appeared in concert series both regionally and internationally. An invitation from the Goethe-Institut in Quito took them on their first tour of Ecuador in April 2025.

Repertoire

With a spirit of experimentation and vibrant creativity, Ensemble Interchange focuses primarily on Renaissance and Baroque music. In their search for contemporary forms of expression, the musicians combine original works and their own arrangements with contemporary compositions to create colourful and varied programmes. The quintet brings together a deep understanding of historical contexts and the rhetorical, language-like elements of music with emotional depth. Musical communication and a sensitive, lasting dialogue with the audience are at the heart of their work.
