ORCHESTRAL SUPERGROUP FOR FLEXIBLE SOUND

The Styriarte Festival Orchestra was founded in 2014 in order to be able to fulfil special orchestral tasks within the framework of the Styriarte. In 2014, these included the Styriarte productions of “Pastorale” and “Der Freischütz”", which were conducted by Michael Hofstetter. In 2018, the orchestra worked together with Andrés Orozco-Estrada for the first time and performed Beethoven’s “Fidelio”.

Cast

The Styriarte Festival Orchestra usually brings together musicians from Recreation – Das Orchester with international guests who bring their specific experience to the project. In 2021, the orchestra will be composed of musicians from Recreation, Concentus Musicus Wien and the Chamber Orchestra of Europe, as well as other international guests.

Special

Working with gut strings in the string corpus and with natural instruments in the brass is standard for the Festival Orchestra. For “Don Giovanni” at the Styriarte 2020, the woodwind instruments were also historical, and the orchestra’s tuning pitch was set to a=430 Hz in keeping with the music of the First Viennese School. For the opening baroque concert of the Styriarte 2020, they played Vallotti on a=415 Hz, as they did for “Il Castrato” in 2021.
