a heart-rending programme for Good Friday

A newcomer to the male altos: Constantin Zimmermann from Switzerland makes his debut in Graz with Pergolesi’s Stabat Mater. Michael Hofstetter presents the golden-haired 25-year-old he helped to discover alongside soprano Miriam Kutrowatz in a heart-rending programme for Good Friday: Pergolesi’s musical legacy and Fux’s Testament unseres Herrn Jesus Christus complement each other perfectly. The anguish that the Passion of Christ causes the Mother of God and John the Apostle standing at the Cross takes the form of deeply moving music.

Johann Joseph Fux: Sinfonia and arias from “Il Testamento di Signor Gesù Cristo sul Calvario” (Sepolcro, 1726)

Miriam Kutrowatz

Soprano

The freshness and expressiveness of her singing, combined with great acting skills, predestine the young Viennese for opera. She made her debut as Zerlina in 'Don Giovanni in Nöten' at the Styriarte, followed by Vivaldi's 'Magnificat' and Handel's 'Alexander's Feast'. In the 2022/23 season, she will make her debut at the Vienna State Opera as Mozart's Papagena and most recently appeared at the Zurich Opera in Handel's Serse.

Constantin Zimmermann

Countertenor

A moving expressiveness from the baroque to the modern has already made the young Swiss a celebrated rising star in his field, even before he graduates from the Mozarteum in Salzburg in the summer of 2024. In 2025, the countertenor will make his debut at the Handel Festival Halle with 'Clori, Tirsi e Fileno' and at our Easter Festival PSALM with Pergolesi's 'Stabat mater'.

Recreation - Das Orchester

Orchestra

Recreation is special in many ways: consisting of musicians whose nationalities range from Japan to Venezuela, most of the members received part of their training in Graz. After its formation in 2002, the collective played unique halls such as the Alte Oper Frankfurt and worked with outstanding conductors.

Michael Hofstetter

Conductor

The Munich-born conductor, born in 1961, has been a very close friend of Styriarte since his highly acclaimed work as chief conductor of the Recreation Orchestra (2012 - 2016). His excellence in the historical practice of baroque and classical music as well as his inspiring enthusiasm on the podium are in demand on the world's great concert and opera stages.
