Tereza Gugg-Kalábová & Johannes Gugg

The young duo dances across the keys with four hands and enchants with an intimate charm that the Czech-born pianist and the Austrian pianist have cultivated since their youth. With a distinctly familiar musical language and excellent technique, the duo has excelled in countless international competitions, from Prima la musica to the ARD Music Competition to the Schubert Competition in Graz.

CAREER

Tereza Gugg-Kalabova, who comes from Czechia, and Johannes Gugg, who comes from Austria, were born in 1998 and have been playing as a piano duo since their youth. Thanks to their early collaboration, they experienced much of their musical development together, which is audible in their particularly subtle and finely balanced interpretations.

Since winning the special prize at the ARD Music Competition in 2021, the piano duo has been performing regularly in major concert halls. In the 2023/24 season, for example, they played at the Vienna Konzerthaus and in the Brahms Hall of the Vienna Musikverein. They also made their debut at the Athenaeum in Bucharest, replacing Martha Argerich.

Both graduated with honors in June 2022 from their solo studies at the University of Music and Performing Arts Graz with Ayami Ikeba and are currently continuing their musical education in the class of the Silver-Garburg piano duo.

AWARDS

The up-and-coming duo has won numerous first prizes, for example at the International Chamber Music Competition “Franz Schubert and Modern Music” in Graz, the Suzana Szörenyi Duo Competition in Bucharest (including the audience prize), the ArtePiano Competition in Castelnuovo di Farfa (Italy), the Franz Schubert Competition in Jesenik (Czechia), the Music and Earth Competition in Sofia, the Vlastimil Lejsek Piano Duo Competition in Brno, the Martha Debelli Scholarship Competition at the University of Music and Performing Arts Graz, the Austrian youth music competition Prima la musica, and the International Summer Academy of the mdw. Their other successes include second prizes at the 14th International Piano Competition in Rome and the Duettissimo Piano Duo Competition in Krakow, where they were also awarded the Mozart Prize.

PERFORMANCES

Concert invitations have already taken the duo to Germany, Czechia, Poland, Romania, Austria, Italy, Spain, the Netherlands, and Brazil. They have played several times with various orchestras such as the Krakow Philharmonic, the Munich Chamber Orchestra, the Webern Chamber Philharmonic, and the Brno Conservatory Orchestra. Their performance of Carl Czerny's piano concerto for four hands with the Webern Chamber Philharmonic was broadcast on ORF as part of a benefit concert for “Licht ins Dunkel” (Light into Darkness). In addition, they have made appearances on television and radio programs in Austria (Intrada, Ö1), Germany (ttt-extra, ARD), Poland (Radio Krakow), Czechia (Radio Vltava), and the Netherlands (Podium Klassiek, NPO).

The duo has been selected for the NASOM support program of the Austrian Foreign Ministry for the years 2025-2026.
